A New Favorite?

Considering one of my favorite tools is the beading plane made by Caleb James, I couldn’t resist the recent opportunity to order another tool from Caleb. The best part was the perfect timing, as I hope to use this on an upcoming project. The tool is a traditional spokeshave, as you might gather from the name, these were used to shape and round spokes for wooden wheels. They’re additionally useful for rounding and shaping a wide variety of pieces, here is a short video of Caleb demonstrating their use.

This particular spokeshave is made from Beech wood and has Persimmon wood boxing near the mouth to help with wear. On this batch of spokeshaves Caleb collaborated with Claire Minihan, who makes some beautiful travishers. I can’t wait to start using my new spokeshave on some upcoming projects, more about that soon!
